A heart condition can cause symptoms at all times of the day, including nighttime. This can lead to sleeping issues such as insomnia, which can make it hard to go to sleep or cause you to wake up during the night and struggle to sleep again.

It is also thought that having a sleeping disorder or not enough sleep could put you at a higher risk of developing heart issues, such as heart disease or a heart attack.

    Frequently asked questions

Answers from the team at Cardiologist London. For personalised advice, book a consultation or call 020 3576 2885.

Are sleep problems linked to heart disease?

Yes. Poor sleep is associated with higher blood pressure and cardiovascular risk over time, and obstructive sleep apnoea - loud snoring with pauses in breathing - is strongly linked to hypertension, atrial fibrillation and stroke, and is very treatable.

    Can heart problems disturb sleep?

They can. Waking breathless, needing extra pillows to sleep comfortably, or night-time palpitations can point to heart failure or rhythm problems and deserve assessment rather than being put down to stress.

What assessment is useful for sleep-related heart concerns?

Blood pressure measurement including a 24-hour monitor (night-time pressure is prognostically important), an ECG or ambulatory monitor for palpitations, screening questions for sleep apnoea with onward referral where needed, and an echocardiogram if heart failure is suspected.
