Heart palpitations typically are caused by heart rhythm disturbances. A lot of these heart rhythm disturbances are benign and pose no threat or risk to you, but can feel unpleasant. The most common cause of palpitations are what we call extra heartbeats or ectopic beats, but we do also need to bear in mind that there are more concerning causes of heart palpitations, especially atrial fibrillation, which is the most common heart rhythm disturbance in this country, and unfortunately is increased with a fivefold increased risk of stroke.
