Frequently asked questions
Answers from the team at Cardiologist London. For personalised advice, book a consultation or call 020 3576 2885.
Does stress really damage the heart?
Chronic stress contributes to raised blood pressure, inflammation and unhealthy coping patterns (poor sleep, diet, smoking, alcohol), all of which raise cardiovascular risk over time. Intense sudden stress can occasionally trigger genuine cardiac events in susceptible people.
Can stress cause chest pain?
It can - but exertional chest tightness should never be attributed to stress without assessment, because angina behaves similarly. If chest pain is severe or lasts more than a few minutes at rest, call 999.
How does a cardiologist help with stress-related symptoms?
By establishing the facts: an ECG, blood pressure assessment and, where indicated, monitoring or imaging either identify a cardiac cause or exclude one with confidence. A definitively normal heart is one of the most effective treatments for health anxiety.
