It's important to know whether you've got a bicuspid aortic valve because with time this congenitally abnormal valve will degenerate prematurely. What can happen with a bicuspid aortic valve varies. Either the valve won't open properly, it becomes stenozed, or it starts leaking excessively.

Additionally, the aorta above the bicuspid aortic valve can progressively enlarge with time. People with bicuspid aortic valves may have no symptoms for the vast majority of their youth. However, with time, as the valve begins to degenerate, you may develop symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, palpitations or fatigue.
